Is It Illegal to Cut Pillow Tags?

That small pillow tag may look like a serious legal warning, but its message is often misunderstood. With bold phrases like **“UNDER PENALTY OF LAW,”** it can seem as though removing the tag is illegal. In reality, the warning was never intended for the person who buys the pillow.

The label was created to protect consumers by preventing manufacturers from filling pillows and mattresses with cheap, dirty, or unsafe materials. Companies were required to list exactly what was inside each product and keep the tag attached until it reached the final buyer. Over time, the warning remained, even though many people forgot why it existed.

Once you purchase the pillow, you become the **“consumer”** mentioned on the tag. That means you are free to remove it without worrying about fines, legal trouble, or breaking the law. The restriction applies to manufacturers and retailers before the product is sold—not to the customer who owns it.

Although you can safely cut the tag off if it is uncomfortable, it may still be worth keeping until you no longer need it. The label often includes useful information such as the filling materials, care instructions, warranty details, and other product information. It can also be helpful if you decide to donate or resell the pillow.

So if that tag has been scratching your face or bothering you every night, you can remove it with confidence. Despite its intimidating wording, the famous **“UNDER PENALTY OF LAW”** warning was designed to protect consumers from dishonest manufacturing practices—not to stop you from cutting the tag off your own pillow.
